A comment on the permanence discussion - I think you’re a bit too quick to dismiss it, since the roguelike short sessions kind of changes things around. There are really two levels of permanence; the lifetime of the session, and all future sessions. Messing with the latter is a problem, which you recognised happened with AWL1. But having the leech protect you from all poison damage for the rest of the AWL2 session doesn’t necessarily have to have the same negative implications.
In my view, having an item colour my session is not a bad thing. Yes, if I get the feather and can hover from hereon after, that’ll make some things easier, but it’ll also make the session memorable, without affecting the next one. If you go through with the suggested changes of making the leech only make you partially immune to poison, then you risk trivialising them.
You do have a point in binary items being a bit shallow, but I think the short play sessions allow for that. As long as the pool of items is big enough, of course. :)
